- ↑ Hasted states that Thomas Polhill, Esq., of Clapham inherited the house and estate of "Chepsted-house" from his brother. It was located at the southern end of the parish of Chevening, Kent. The house was in existence since at least the latter part of the reign of Elizabeth I. Polhill sold the house to "Sir Nicholas Strode, of Westerham," before his death in 1665. The widow of Sir Nicholas Strode resold the house in July 1693 to William Emerton of the Temple. He demolished and rebuilt the house.
