Biographical synthesis
Simon Driver (alt. Symon Driver) (b.ca.1615; d.?1667). Cooper.
Resident in parish of Saint Botolph Billingsgate in 1655.
"Master Simon Driver" appears in the 1638 list of inhabitants of Saint Botolph Billingsgate with a rent of £7.[1]
J.C.Whitebrook (1910) states that "Simon Driver was Churchwarden of S. Botolph's Billingsgate in 1659, and was still living in 1669."[2] He may be the Simon Driver cooper, of Saint Olave in Southwark, whose will was proven on October 26 1669.[3]
His seventeen year old daughter, Mary Driver, married Erasmus Cholmeley, a twenty-five year old brewer of Saint Olave Southwark. The marriage allegation is dated September 28th 1661 and was with the consent of Simon Driver, who is described as "of Saint Botolph Billingsgate, Wine Cooper."[4]
Simon Driver may well have been related to the forty year old widower Thomas Driver (b.ca.1625; m.1665; d.ca.1673), who was a cooper of Saint Botolph Billingsgate, and whose marriage was alleged in September 1665 to Anne Brocke of Barnet, Hertfordshire.[5] Thomas Driver is listed in the 1666 hearth tax returns for Saint Botolph Billingsgate with an address at Fresh Wharf, where he had a property with five hearths.[6]
Simon and Thomas Driver may well have both been related to another Thomas Driver, wine cooper of Billingsgate, whose will was proved in September 1661.[7]
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Simon Driver deposed on March 22nd 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel on behalf of Tether in the case of "Tether against Bryan and shipp Julian.[8]
"Symon Dryver", cooper, is mentioned in the deposition of XXX XXXX. Dryver, by order of the father of XXX the deponent, disposed of the remaining hogshead and a half of copperis and sold it for the account of Anthony Tether.[9].
