Overview

This page provides notes, rather than a full transcription, of Edward & Jonathan Ashe & Company account book, 1645-51. The notes cover only certain folios in the account book.

The notes provide examples of names given in the accounts. The accompanying item detail and associated cash sums and quantitites have largely been omitted.

Abstract & context

C107/20 BOX PART 1 contains three sets of account books. They are bound in parchment, each ca. 9” by 15” and about 1” thick. They are in reasonable condition.

One of the three account books is marked in handwritten black ink now faded brown "Edward & Jonathan Ashe & Company." It covers the period 1645-51.

Edward and Jonathan Ashe were brothers and commercial partners. Edward Ashe was the dominant partner, with two thirds of the capital.

They were members of the Ashe clothier family of XXXX.

Edward Ashe subscribed to both the Smirna Venture Joint Stock[1] and the Williams Venture, which were private joint stock companies set up to pursue private trade outside the expired English East India Company monopoly in the mid-1650s.
