and so much hee saith was and is publique and notorious, and saith this deponent
hath bin very well assured thereof by sewerall persons who were present at the
burial of the said Otto George at Lubeck, and are some of them at present
in this Citie. And further hee cannot depose:-/
To the 6th hee saith hee cannot depose
To the 7th hee saith, That about three yeares before the seizure of the arlate
ship the Sampson by the English in or about November 1652: the said
ship Sampson had been at Amsterdam, and had there discharged a lading
brought in her from Spaine, but saith hee hath hever heard, nor doeth hee
in conscience believe, that shee was ever at Amsterdam since that time of
about 3. yeares before her said seizure, forasmuch as this deponent hath
credibly heard and been informed that for all that time shee was upon
trading voyages imployed to sewerall Ports and places in the Straights, and
there remained till about the time of her said seizure by the English
And further hee cannot depose./
To the 8: and 9th hee saith hee cannot depose./
To the 10 11. 12. 13. and 14th hee saith hee knoweth nothing thereof.
To the last hee saith his foregoeing deposition is true./
To the Interrogatories:- [CENTRE HEADING]
To the first Interrogatory hee saith hee is a native of hamborough, and hath
lived in and been a Bourgher of Lubeck for about 22. yeares last past, And
saith he hath not, nor ever had any part or interest in the ship Sampson interrate,
nor any relation of kindred either to the interrate Otto George, or to any of the
Owners of the said ship Sampson. And further cannot depose./
To the second hee saith hee is by profession a mariner and that his constant
residence is at Lubeck, and saith hee was about three yeares since at Amsterdam
being taken by the Hollanders in his then ship the Ostrich of dantsick, and
saith he then remained in Amsterdam for about 12. dayes, And saith hee never
saw the ship the Sampson interrate from the time that shee was built and sett to
sea from Lubeck as aforesaid, till such time as hee saw her in the River of
Thames after shee was seized by the English as is predeposed./
To the third hee saith, That the name of the Shipwright, who built the ship
Sampson interrate was and is Jurian Steechman, who is a Burgher and
inhabitant of Lubeck, and one of the Principall Shipwrights there, And saith that
one Caspar Vischer a Lubecker and Thomas Peterson of Veymeren neere Lubeck
were at the time of the said shipps building servants to the said Steechman and assistants in the
building thereof, besides others whose names and places of Nativitie hee doeth
not at present remember. And saith hee this rendent did never see any moneys
paid for or about the building of the said ship Sampson, And further cannot
depose./
To the fourth hee saith, it is prohibited by the constitutions and customs of the
City of Lubeck, for any stranger whatsoever to cause any ship to be built for the
accompt of strangers, at the said place of Lubeck, And saith this rendent hath never
knowne or heard of any ship there originally built for the use or accompt of
any stranger of the United Netherlands or elsewhere. And further cannot depose/
