The 29th day of November 1654:- [CENTRE HEADING]
Examined upon the said Allegation:-

Peter Rokes of Lubeck in Germania Mariner Steeresman of
the shipp the Goulden Grape of dantsick aged 43. yeares
or thereabouts a Wittnes sworne and examined saith as followeth
videlicet
To the first Article of the said Allegation hee saith and deposeth That it is well
knowne and generally observed amongst Merchants Seamen and Shippwrights
That the manner of building of shipps in holland is very much different from
that of Lubeck, the holland shipps being ordinarily made more neate and light of
timber, and those of Lubeck of a course and plainer fashion, and full timbred.
Which hee knoweth being a Mariner experienced in shipps for the space of 32.
yeares last past or thereabouts, and thereby haveing well observed and exactly knowing
the difference of shipps built at Lubeck from those of the United Netherlands And
further cannot depose.
To the second and third articles hee saith and deposeth, That the shipp the Sampson
arlate, (whereof the arlate Otto George was Master or Commander) was and is of
the mould and fashion observed at Lubeck and so much hee saith may very be well
discerned by any man experienced in the manner of building of shipps usuall at that place
And saith That of this deponents ight and certaine knowledge, the said shipp
the Sampson was originally built at Lubeck by one Jurian Steechman a Burgher
and shippwright of Lubeck in the yeare 1646, last past; the said shipp being
in that yeare fully compleated there, and such her building and finishing there,
hee saith, was and is publique and notorious, and taken notice of by many hundreds
of persons, And That hee this deponent hath severall times seene and observed the said
shipp the Sampson lyeing and being in the river of Thames since the time of her
seizure by some of the shipps of this Commonwealth, and well knoweth her to be one
and the same shipp which of his sight and knowledge, as is predeposed, was built at
Lubeck aforesaid: The premisses hee this deponent declareth and deposeth for that hee hath
beene an inhabitant and Burgher of the said Citie of Lubeck for about 22. yeares
last past, and hath as aforesaid been (as hee remembreth) a seafaring person for
32 yeares last past or thereabouts. And further cannot depose./:-
To the 4th hee saith, That the said shipp the Sampson hath ever since her building as
aforesaid, belonged to the Citie and Port of Lubeck, and for a shipp to that port
belonging hath bin and is commonly reputed and taken, and saith that from the
Originall building thereof till the time of her said seizure, the arlate Otto George
who was a Citizen and inhabitant of Lubeck. was constantly and continualy the Master
and Commander of the said shipp, And saith That from the time of the said shipps
building and finnishing as aforesaid, shee never did, so farr as this deponent knoweth,
or hath ever heard, or is in Conscience convinced belonged to Amsterdam, or been
reputed a shipp belonging to that place, or to any other Port or place in holland.
The premisses hee deposeth upon the grounds predeposed. And further cannot depose:-
To the 5th hee saith, That the arlate Otto George about a yeare since being
sick and weake departed from London, and went for and arrived at Lubeck the
place of his usuall habitation, and shortly after did there depart this life, and was
there interred as a Burgher and Citizen of that place, as indeed hee really was
