Biographical synthesis
Simon Messenger (alt. Symon, Messinger) (b. ca. 1618, poss earlier; m. ?1634, ?Maudlin Powell; d.?>1666). Cooper.
Record of a wedding of "Simon Messenger, of Ratcliffe, cooper" dated 1634 to Maudlin Powell, of the same parish, widow. This date would suggest the estimated birth year of 1618, derived from Simon Messenger's stated age of forty in his 1658 High Court of Admiralty, is erroneous.[1]
Two christenings are recorded in the register of the parish of Saint Dunstan, Stepney, for children of Simon Messenger and Maudlin Powell. The first is of Margaret Messenger (June 10th 1635) and the second for Simon Messeneger (November 13th 1637). The son, Simon Messenger, is recorded in burials in the same parish on July 21st 1638.
A second marriage of a "Symon Messenger" to Dammeris Feringe, dated January 1st 1644, is recorded in the parish of Saint Olave Southwark. It is unlikely this is for Simon Messenger, cooper, the subject of this profile, since there is a probate index record for "Symon Messenger" of Saint Olave, Southwarke, dated 1658.[2]
Resident in Shadwell in Middlesex in 1658. Still resident in Shadwell at the time of the 1666 Hearth Tax returns, when "Simon Messenger" was recorded living in Shadwell with a property of four hearths.[3]
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
November 1658
Forty year old Simon Messenger deposed on November 8th 1658 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalfe of Watson and Howe in the case of "Warren against Watson and How".[4]
The case concerned the size of Virginia tonnage of tobacco relative to other commodities and to other sources of tobacco.
1658
William Bassett, a forty year old grasier of Shadwell in the parish of Stepney, deposed on September 8th 1658 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel on behalf of William Thomas in the cause of "William Thomas against the shipp the John of Barkesheire and against Edmund Halley and his part thereof".[5]
The case concerned a fishing voyage to Spitzbergen ("Greeneland") for whales involving two ships - the John of Barkeshire and the Sarah of London. A contract was drawn up to regulate the voyage and was made between the various owners of the two ships. William Bassett, Edmund Halley and William Thomas were part-owners of three quarters parts of the two ships and Simon Messenger, John Tarleton and Robert Browning were part-owners of the other quarter of the two ships.[6] The precise share that Simon Messenger owned of the two ships was one thirty-second.[7]
Date unclear, but post 1657
An allegation dated XXX and d
The proctor of Thomas Middleton in his name and as executor of the last will and testament of Peeter Silvester deceased against Symon Messinger, Robert Hooker, George Younge, Samuell Hill, John Hawes, Thomas Thompson, William Thomson, Henry Reynols, John Grannt, Elizabeth Thompson Relict and Executrix or adminstratrix of Henry Thompson deceased, Peeter ?Crompton and Edward Thompson".
Allegation identifies the defendants as the part owners of the ship the Two Sisters betwen 1655 and 1657. The owners appointed Henry Thompson as master and commander ofthe same ship. A voyage was agreed to Jameca (i.e. Jamaica) and other ports and places beyond the saeas and then to Barbados and back to London. About 30 mariners were to go and serve on the ship. Phillipp Gorrell was appointed to goe as masters ?mate in the ship. The ship proceeded on its voyage, arriving first in New England and then in Barbados.[8]
