Transcription

Moore doe upon their respective Oathes declare and depose,
That they all of them went in and were of the said shipps
Companie in the Voiage aforesaid and in the severall qualities
predeposed, And that the said shipp hopewell being [?XXXXX] upon
the occasion before recited from the said french Squadron of shipps of
Warrs did upon the 11th of May 1654 last past in the night meet
with a dutchman of warr, which being haled by them, replyed shee
was of Amsterdam, and thereupon the said William Gainer as
Masters mate of the said shipp hopewell told them that peace was
concluded upon between the dutch and English, and that they
were and ought to be friends or to that effect; thereupon being
demannded by the dutch whence they were and whether bound
answer was returned, they were of London, and bound for
Mallega, upon which the said dutchman of warr seeming to
depart bidd them farewell, but coming along the side of the said
shipp hopewell and being past her gunns dischardged a full broade side and a volley of
small shott into her, whereupon the said Gainer and Companie
prepared themselves for resistance of the said dutchman of warr
and for the defence of themselves their said ship and lading
from their violence, and so continued in fight with them from
about 9. of the Clocke in the night till about two or three
of the Clocke in the afternoone of the day following being the
12th day of May .1654:- and then the said dutchman of warr declined any further ingagement
whereupon the said shipp hopewell with the first convenience
of wind made towards the Spanish shoare, and anchored neere
a place called [?Stipion] Castle under the Government of the kinge
of Spaine, and being there at Anchor the said dutch man
or warr came and anchored close by them, and the Lieutenant
thereof coming aboard the hopewell upon the said 12th day of May
the said William Gainer amongst other discourse said to the said
Lieutenant hee hoped that when they (meaning the said shipp
hopewell and Companie) came into England they (meaning the
said dutchman of warrs Companie) should answer for the
dammage they had done to the said shipp hopewell and
her Companie and lading, to which the said Lieutenant
