The 27th of March 1655. [CENTRE HEADING]

Affidavit touching the}
fflower pot}

Rp.

Richard Jacob of dover in the County of kent
Mariner, aged 52 yeares or thereabouts sworne
before the right worshipfull William Clarke doctor
of lawes one of the Judges of the high Court
of the Admiraltie saith and deposeth
by vertue of his oath

That about five weekes since there issued out of
this Court a Commission for the inspecting the goods in the shipp the
fflower pot, taken by vertue of a Commission grannted to Edward
Goodwin and brought into dover, directed to Michael de haze
John L[?amm], humphrey Mantle, Beniamin dela{?XXX] and Thomas
[?ffanchee]; and that the said Commission was about a
moneth since presented to the said Michaell dehaze and Beniamin
da[?lXXX] and others of the said Commissioners at dover by the said mr
Goodwin in the presence of this deponent, and they were by him
desired to put the said Commission in execution, and inspect
the said goods according to the [?tenour] thereof, and make certificate
thereupon to this Court. And that diverse of the company of
the said shipp and alsoe severall waiters that were onboard
her, were brought before them of this deponents sight and
knowledgem, and did certifie the said de haze, de [?XXXX] and
other the said Commissioners in this deponents presence and
hearing that the said shipp was very leakie, and had but
one pumpe, which as they said they were constrained to use
very much every tide, and they were further told by the
said company that in case the said pump should breake
the said shipp woud by reason of her leakinesse be
sunck in the space of one tide, and the goods aboard her
would utterly perish thereby. And that the said de haze
de [?XXX] and the other Commissioners present were desired
by the said mr Goodwin to make certificate of the premisses
which they the saud de haze and de [?laXXXX] refused and
denied to doe, albeit the other Commissioners were willing and offered
to [?oine] with them in the said certificate.[?XXXX] which this
deponent was present and heard the same. And further that
this deponent went aboard the said shipp lying in dover peere
and sawe and found her in such condition as aforesaid namely that the
said pump was of necessitie plied every tide, and that without
soe doeing the said shipp would undoubdetedly in the space of a tide have sunck
and soe much was evident to the said mr de haze and mr
de [?lXXXX], who stood upon the key, and sawe in what
abundance the water was pumped up, notwithstanding that
the pump was continually plied all the [?tide]
