his highnesse the lord Protector against}
Captaine G[?ottens[ and company}

Cornelius Releques of der schelling in
North holland Mariner, master of the shipp
the Brandares or Beacon of Amsterdam
aged 34 yeeres or thereabouts sworne before the
right worshipfull William Clerke and John
Godolphin doctors of lawes, Judges of the
high Court of the Admiraltie saith and
deposeth by vertue of his oath.

That there were laden aboard the said shipp the Brandares at
Brouage in ffrance 347 moyes and eleaven [?measures] of salt to be
thence transported to haver de Grace and there to be delivered for the
accompt of ffrenchmen, and this hee saith was in or about the moneth
of August last, and being soe laden the said shipp depaarted with
the said salt from Brouage for haver de Grace and comming neere
the entrance of the said haver, the said shipp was on the first of this
present moneth of September (old stile) met with and with her
said lading surprized and taken by the said Captaine Gittens and
company in a shipp of warr in service of this Commonwealth. And
saith that upon the said seizure the said Captaine Gittens his company
embeazeld and tooke away as much of the said shipps lading of salt
as in his estimation amounted to twenty lasts, for hee saith they tooke
out soe much, as that the shipp drawes a foote lesse in depth of water
thereby, and that they caried the same away in boates, And this deponent
demanding of Captaine Gittens his Lieutenant wherefore the
company in such manner ambeazeld and carried away the salt, hee made
this deponent answer that they had the said Captaines order for the
same, and that it was prize, and therefore this deponent had nothing
to doe to aske that question, or to that effect, and saith that the said
salt soe plundered and embeazeld laye (about seaven or eight lasts
thereof) betwixt decks and the rest in the hold of the said shipp the
Brandares, And further saith that not therewith content
they tooke and plundered away from this deponents company (who were
all hollanders) the summe of 166 gelders in ffrench money;
All which hee knoweth being master of the
Brandares and present and seeing the premisses soe donne, only hee did
not see the money at the instant of the taking the same away, but
his company gave him an accompt of what was taken from each man
amounting in all to 166 gelders in ffrench money, which this deponent
had in ffrance paid them for wages.
