Transcription

The thirteenth of ffebruary 1654. [CENTRE HEADING]

Pope Burges and Houghton against}
Orton. Clements. Smith.}

Examined upon an allegation made in the
acts of Court the seaventh of this
instant.

Rp. 1

Andrew Beake of Rose-Alley in Bishopsgate streete
London Looking-glasse maker, aged 36 yeares or thereabouts
sworne and examined.

To the said allegation made in the acts of Court hee saith and deposeth
that the ship the Content mentioned in this
Court at the sute of Pope Burges and Houghton, was in the service
and imployment of this Commonwealth, which hee knoweth to be
true, for that hee this deponent, at the time of the said arrest
(which happened as hee remembreth in the winter time 1653) was aboard
her, as a labourer, and imployed about delivereie out
of her powder, shott, muskets pistols, and other ammunition part of
a store of the Commonwealth put into her towards the supplie of the Commonwealths
Navie, into which service the Content was taken up. And saith that
shee had a brasse gunn and three barrels of small shott (part of
the said store) undelivered at the time of the said arrest
which hee saith were delivered out about foure or five dayes
after the said arrest and not before, And otherwise hee cannot
depose, saving the said ship at the time of the said arrest was
lying and attending her said delivereie, under the States crane
at Tower wharfe.

To the first it is donne as is required, and hee saith that hee remembreth not the day of
the moneth of the said arrest, but for the day of the weeke, it
was to his remembrance on a Thursday or a Friday, and for
the moneth, hee saith it was (to his remembrance)
some what before Christmas 1653. And saith that one ffrancis
Br[?evet] was then master of the said vessel or supplied the
place of master. And saith hee well knoweth the said Br[?evet]
but cannot commend his honestie, in that hee knoweth him to
be one that is not willing to pay poore men their wages when
hee sett them on worke, as hee did this deponent. Howbeit this
deponent beleeveth that upon his oath hee will speake the
truth betwixt partie and partie. And otherwise hee
cannot answer.
