Andrew Rand for his goods in the
Nostra Seniora da Rosario}

Examined upon the foresaid
Allegation

Captaine Thomas Ewens of Limehouse
in the County of Middlesex Mariner aged
46 yeares or thereabouts sworne and
examined

To the first second and third articles hee saith and deposeth that in and
during the monthes of June and July 1650 arlate the
producent Andrew Rand (whom this deponent very well knoweth)
was at Bahia de Tadas las Santos in Brazila with his shipp
the Thomas and Lucy whereof hee was commannder, and that
the shipp of Portugall called Nostra Senora da
Rosario (whereof George Wheeler was master or Supercargo) was alsoe there,
which hee knoweth because hee this deponent was then alsoe
there with the shipp the Scipio whereof hee was commannder.
And this deponent well knoweth that the said Captaine Rand
had there severall chests of sugar for his accompt, which hee saith
were the proceede of goods which hee carried thether, and the said
Rand (as this deponent heard him say) [?resolved] to transport the same
for Portugall, and saith that one Belchier vas Revera Resident
in Bahia was a merchant to whom Captaine Rand was recommended
from Lisbone by one James Lagan for assistance at Bahia, and
accordingly the said Belchier did assist him and there was
familiaritie and correspondance betweene them of this deponents
sight and knowledge, and the said Belchier had severall goods of the
said Andrew Rands in his custodie, and this deponent verily beleeveth
that there were tenn chests of sugar laden at Bahia for the said
Andrew Rands accompt aboard the said shipp the Nostra Senora da Rosario
to be transported for Lisbone, and hee verily beleeveth the sae
for the reasons aforesaid and for that hee hath nowe seene the bill
of lading for the same, signed by the said Wheeler. And this deponent
beleeveth they were consigned to the said Lagen, to the end to save
them from the Sequestration which was ladid by the kinge of Portugall
on the goods of the English. And otherwise hee cannot depose, saving
hee heard the said Wheeler afterwards being put ashore in Portugall
say that hee had bin taken with his said shipp and lading comming from
Bahia for Lisbone by one Captaine Jourdanne in one of the frigots
of this Commonwealth.
