goods are in when they are stowed and this rendent being present at the stoweing of the
baggs of pepper predeposed of did take speciall notice that they were very wett in soe
much that the water might have been wrunge out of them and this deponent seeing
the ill condition they were in was unwilling to receave them on board and would
not have receaved them but that the lighter men refused to carry the sayd
baggs of pepper againe and soe in a manner constreyned the shipps company
to take them aboaard And further saving his foregoeing deposition hee cannot answere
saving hee saith that it being the gutie of the Masters mate to tell the Master of such
things as is Interrogate hee this rendent did not speake to him thereof
To the 4th hee saith hee was not present at the bargaine makeing when the Interrate
haslegrace sold part of the pepper at Cadiz but hee this rendent helped to
slinge some of the same out of the hold, but knoweth not how many hundred weight there
was of it nor for how much or to whom it was sold./
To the 5th hee saith the pepper hee helped to slinge was in baggs and hee being
under decks sawe not the weight of it and further hee cannot answere

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee as a Quartermaster in the Shipp
Interrogate the voyage Interrogate and was paid his full wages for his service
and is not indebted nor of kinne to the producent nor a servant to him otherwise
then as his place in shipp requireth
To the 2 and 3 Interrogatories hee saith it is not usuall for Masters of shipps to take
notice and Care them selves of the stowage of goods or what condition they are
in when stowed but the care thereof is usually committed to their Mates who doe
usually take notice what condition the goods are in when stowed And further to
these Interrogatories hee cannot depose for the reasons in his foregoeing
deposition expressed videlicet that hee came aboard at dover Roade after
the pepper in question was stowed/
To the 4th and 5th Interrogatories hee saith hee was not present at the bargaine makeing

same was sold nor what was paid for the same for that hee this deponent

of Surrey Mariner aged twenty sixe
yeares or thereabouts a witnesse sworne and
examined saith and deposeth as followeth videlicet
To the first article hee saith hee was present when the arlate Mr Arnold
and Elias Beake and alsoe Mr John do[?lins] and Mr Thomas Greene four of
the reputed Owners of the shipp Saint John Baptist and her ladeing in question did
