and after about an howers tyme returned againe to the place where the sayd<br />
Woods and those of the shipps company who assisted him were weighing of ffish on<br />
shoare, and the sayd Grove went on shoare but what words passed<br />
betweene the sayd Woods and Grove hee knoweth not, but saith hee being alsoe<br />
purser knoweth that there were one hundred and twenty kintalls of ffish<br />
laden that day aboard the ''Peace'', and saith there were twenty seaven men &<br />
boyes belonging to the ''Peace'' most of which were on shoare imployed about<br />
the shippes affayres some about helpeing to lade the sayd 120 kintalls of<br />
fish and others about other busines but how those who remayned on board were<br />
imployed by the Master hee knoweth not And further hee cannot depose/
To the 12th and 13th articles hee saith that while the sayd shipp ''Peace'' remayned at<br />
Newfound land this deponent being belowe deck heard the arlate Thomas<br />
Grove and the arlate Luke Woods at variance togeather upon the deck and<br />
heard the sayd Grove call the sayd Wood old Roague and Pedler and other<br />
reproachfull words and sayd that if hee the sayd Woods were not an old<br />
Roague hee the sayd Grove would drubb him and the sayd Grove speaking further to XXX the<br />
sayd Woods sayd thus or the like in effect you old Roague yow were in the hold<br />
the other day but if ever I see yow in hold againe I will trice yow up with a<br />
tackle, and hee saith that hee beleeveth that the occasion of such falling out<br />
betweene them was about salt which the sayd Grove refused to deliver<br />
according to the sayd Woods order for that this deponent after the<br />
sayd words were spoken comming up from belowe deck heard the sayd Grove<br />
and Woods talkeing somewhat more mildely upon the deck touching the delivery<br />
of salt and heard the sayd Woods aske the sayd Grove why hee would not<br />
suffer the salt to be delivered according to his the sayd Woods order whereto<br />
the sayd Grove replyed and sayed that hee wanted stiffening and the sayd Woods<br />
then speakeing to the sayd Grove sayd why then did you not gett stones bought<br />
aboard before for stiffening and these last<br />
mentioned speeches passed betweene them upon the open deck after this deponent<br />
came up upon the deck in the presence of severall of the sayd shipps company<br />
And further to these articles hee cannot depose./
To the 14th article hee saith that the sayd Wood being discontented at the speeches<br />
and passages aforesayd which had passed aboard betweene the sayd Grove and him<br />
did the same day (but wht day it was hee remembreth not) goe on shoare and left the<br />
sayd Grove and the arlate Tizard his Mate and this deponent aboard with the sayd<br />
Grove And hee saith that the sayd Grove the Master and the sayd Tizard being in talks<br />
togeather upon the deck hee this deponent heard the sayd Grove in an angerie<br />
manner saye there is a knott of yow which I will breake, but his meaning<br />
by those words this deponent knoweth not And hee saith that afterwards in<br />
the afternoone of that day this deponent goeing on shoare the sayd Woods<br />
was mentioned that if the sayd Woods pleased then to send aboard for any<br />
salt that hee wanted or would have out of the shipp it should be delivered<br />
And further to this article hee cannot depose./
To the 15th article hee saith that hee being aboard the ''Peace'' after hee had soe<br />
seene the noate aforesayd knoweth that some persons came with boates for<br />
salt as being sent for the same by the sayd Woods and that the sayd Thomas<br />
Grove the Master caused them to be turned away without receiving any salt<br />
notwithstanding the noate hee had soe written to Mr Woods And saith that when<br />
the sayd Grove soe refused to deliver the sayd salt the sayd shipp laye in the harbour<br />
of Saint Jones in Newfound land, which is a good harbour, and had then aboard her<br />
diversand had then aboard her<br />
