yeeres since the said Albert went out of Brest in the service of the<br />
kinge of ffrance in the Vice Admirall of ffrance called the Virgin,<br />
(whereof hee the said Albert was pilot) which were with the<br />
kings ffleete into the River of Bordeaux towards the reducing<br />
of Bordeaux then in hostilitie, and contineued in the said service<br />
about the thirteene monethes, which hee knoweth because hee this deponent<br />
went out in the same fleete in anothers shipp and continued alsoe<br />
in the same service, and during the same hee often sawe the said<br />
Albert, and where they afterwards disbanded, the said Albert<br />
retourned to Brest in another of the kings frigots, wherein this<br />
deponent served. And otherwise hee cannot depose

aged 36 yeares or thereabouts, sworne before<br />
the right worshippfull John Godolphin doctor of lawes<br />
one of the judges of the high Court of the Admiraltie<br />
and exámined upon certaine Interrogatories ministred on<br />
the behalfe of Adrian van Rode, saith and deposeth.
To the first second and third Interrogatories hee saih and deposeth that<br />
somewhat before Christmas last was twelve moneth the shipp the ''Julian'' of<br />
London of which Richard Brian was master, came from Roane<br />
bound for dunquirke with a lading of ffrench wine in her for<br />
the account of the producent Adrian van Roade and others, which were to have bin<br />
transported to and delivered at dunquirke for the same account, and<br />
that in her course of sailing from Roane for dunquirke meeting<br />
with excessive stormes and tempestuous weather, shee was neere deale<br />
in kent stranded and cast away, and the shipp bilging, the<br />
wines were in danger to have bin all lost, but by the greate care of<br />
this deponent and the paines of the persons then hee imployed, there<br />
were a good part of the said wines, saved, but many peeces of those<br />
that were saved were damnified, and saith there were many lost and quite spoiled and<br />
cast away by the said disaster, amongst which that were soe lost and<br />
perished, hee saith the said van Roade lost nine and thirtie<br />
puncheones of wine, and saith the said disaster happened about<br />
in the moneth of November 1654, All which<br />
hee knoweth being especially imployed both by the said van Roade<br />
and by mr M[?ervin] on the behalfe of the Assurers about the said salvage, and further saith that the<br />
said van Roade by the said wines lost and by the dammage of those that<br />
were saved and by charges in and about the said salvage, hath sustained<br />
losse and dammage to the summe of five hundred pounds sterling and<br />
upwards, the very charges comming to about two hundred and sixtie pounds<br />
for the proportion of the said van Roade.
