To the first article of the said Allegation hee saith and deposeth that<br />
hee well knewe the ship the ''Hopewell'' arlate and the arlate John Wood<br />
Who within and dureing all the time allegate was Master and Commander<br />
and allsoe part owner of the said ship and had and tooke that charge and<br />
Command upon him which hee knoweth to bee true because hee this deponent<br />
was dureing the said tyme one of the Company of and belonging to the<br />
said ship the ''Hopewell''. And further hee cannot depose.
To the second and third articles of the said Allegation hee saith and<br />
deposeth That when the tyme predeposed the parties producent in this<br />
cause (and whose names are mentioned in the schedule annexed) being<br />
by the said Wood hired to serve in the said shippe the ''Hopewell'' upon<br />
a voyage from this Port to [XXX] all Ports and Places beyond the Seas<br />
for and after the rate of the respective wages schedulated, They did proceed<br />
upon the said voyage accordingly and ente=re into whole pay at<br />
Gravesend upon or about the beginning of September 1648 arlate at which<br />
tyme the said ship departed thereupon and from thenceforth they the said<br />
Producents did respectively doe and performe theire dutyes a[??ssines] and imployments<br />
abord the said ship very faithfully diligently and carefully All which premisses<br />
hee knoweth to bee true because hee this deponent was dureing all the tyme<br />
predeposed one of the said ships Company together with the said producents and<br />
dureing the same sawe them at Naples receave wages for some tyme according<br />
to the rates schedulated and dureing all the said voyage sawe and tooke especiall<br />
notice of theire behaviour and orderly carriage abord the said ship. And further<br />
hee cannot depose.
To the fowrth article of the said Allegation hee saith and deposeth That<br />
[?albeit] the said shippe the ''Hopewell'' was taken and seized by [XXX]<br />
Piratt att Sea in her homewards voyage as is arlate yet hee saith<br />
the said producents nor any of them were guilty thereof nor had<br />
they any hand therein but with the rest of the Company did theire uttmost<br />
endeavors for the preservation thereof which hee knoweth for the reasons by him<br />
predeposed And further hee cannot depose;
