Contents

Who is in the index

The index below lists fifty-nine merchant individuals, who were commercially active at some time in the 1650-1669 period.

Most of them were subscribers to the Smirna Venture Joint Stock and/or the King Fernandez Joint Stock, with which George Oxenden and his brother Christopher Oxenden were associated. Others have known commercial links to the Oxenden family or to the more commercially prominent of the subscribers to the two above mentioned joint stocks

How to use the index

  • Select a merchant individual you are interested and use the hyperlinked text to move to a list of Chancery cases which may involve that merchant individual, and/or near members of his family

  • The Chancery cases are listed in ascending order of National Archive catalogue code

  • Items in bold are probably or definitely matches to the named merchant individual, or to a closely related member of his family (e.g. son, brother, or widow) (50% chance of a match, or better)

  • Items in normal text may be matches to the named merchant individual, or to a closely related member of his family (e.g. son, brother, or widow) (25-30% chance of a match, or better, but below a 50& chance)

These probabalistic judgments are offered cautiously, and are based on various qualitative criteria:

- Is the case marked Middlesex?

    • Increases likelihood that it is a commercial case

- If the case is for a county away from London, is the county one associated with the named merchant individual?

- Is the case marked "money matters"?

    • Increases likelihood that it is a commercial case

- Does the index record indicate an attached schedule, and if so, is the description a commercial one?

- Does the index record include a known merchant, either as plaintiff or defendant?

    • Increases likelihood that the case is a commercial one

Sir Samuel(l) Mico(e) & family

Review of primary sources

There are a large number of Chancery records for the period 1650-1680 which plausibly involve Samuel Mico and/or his relative and factor Aaron Mico, or his widow, Lady Jane Mico. These records do not appear to have been examined by writers on Mico, or the Spanish and Levant trades.

Several of the records following the date of Samuel Mico's decease appear to involve his relative ([Andrew] Barker. Several more of the records pre Samuel Mico's decease appear to involve possible trading relationships or estate matters with merchants such as [?John] Fenn, [?Aaron and/or Alexander Bence], Daniel and Jonathan Andrewes.

There are also published letters addressed to or mentioning Samuel and/or Aaron Mico in collection of correspondence of Richard Houncell.[2]
