Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Forty-two year old John Orton deposed on June 9th 1657 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Prior in the case of "Ewen against Prior".[1]
John Orton claimed to be an independent witness, saying "hee for his part is noe low waterman, nor lighter man, nor was ever imployed about takeing up of ballast nor hath any share in any lighters of the sayd Pryors or any other person".[2]
