under running of the Cable of the James and Martyn that
the Imployment
had for want of a boy at the Anchor of the James and Martin to discover
where it lay, fall upon the sayd shipps Anchor, and thereby made a hole
in the Imployments bilge, which being discovered the Master and Company
of the Imployment called out for helpe and procured neere about a
hundred men from shoare and from other shipps to pumpe and bayle the
Imployment and soe cleare her of water that they might get her to shoare
to harde ground to stopp her leake which the sayd Anchor had
made, but saith that notwithstanding all their indeavour it was five
tydes after her sayd dammage receaved before the Imployment could
bee gott to hard ground to be amended, And hee saith hee well knoweth
the Master of the Imployment had constantly every tyde of the sayd
five tydes (beside his owne company and other freinds who came gratis
out of love to helpe) at the least three score hyred men who
pumped and bayled and laboured all that tyme to get her to harde ground
And hee this deponent sawe the master of the Imployment pay some
who soe wrought for hyre halfe a crowne a tyde and others three
shillings a tyde for their labour and verily beleeveth it could not nor
did cost him lesse then five or sixe pounds a tyde to labourers
during the sayd five tydes And further to these articles hee cannot
depose./
To the 13th hee saith the Imployment is a shipp of about three
hundred tonnes, and before shee receaved dammage by the Anchor
aforesayd in manner aforesayd was of this deponents knowledge being
Carpenter of her a strong tight and sufficient shipp, but by meanes
of her being hawled a shoare to stopp her leake made by the sayd Anchor
shee was (by reason shee had much water in her and the greatest part
of her ladeing) soe heavie that shee was unavoidably much damnified
and much of her tymber worke broken soe that this deponent being a
Carpenter well knoweth that it well cost her Owners twenty pounds
sterling at the least to make her in soe good condition as shee was
before shee receive the samage aforesayd by meanes of the
anchor aforesayd, And saith hee well knoweth for the reasons aforesayd
that had not the Imployment before the damage receaved bin a strong
tight shipp she had in all likelyhood receaved 500 li for that
hee beleeveth if shee had bin weake her whole hull would have bin lost
