The sixth of October 1655. [CENTRE HEADING]

The Lord Protector against a certaine shipp
named the Grayhound, taken by Captaine}
Gittens in the Preston frigot.}

Examined upon certaine Interrogatories
ministred on his highnesses behalfe

Rowe dt.

John Mauger of deepe in the Realme of ffrance
Mariner, master of the said shipp the Grayhound
aged 33 yeeres or thereabouts sworne and examined.

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that the said shipp
the Grayhound was seized by the Preston frigot Captaine Gittens
commannder in or about the end of August last past about three
leagues off Seine-head on the coast of ffrance, and that this deponent
was then master of her, and had soe bin about foure yeares before such
seizure, and was constituted master by Peter [?Poulle] of Amsterdam owner
of her, and that hee then first tooke care of her and went aboard her
at Amsterdam, And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the second hee saith that the said shipp Grayhound belongeth to the
port of Amsterdam, and hath soe belonged for all the said time that this
deponent hath bin master of her, and saith the said Peter [?Poulle] was
owner of her when shee was seized and is soe at present, and saith
the said Peter liveth at Amsterdam and keepeth his wife and familie
there and soe hath donne for all the time of this deponents knowledge
of him and was and is a subiect of the Lords the States of the United
Netherlands, and is (as hee beleeveth) a dutchman and noe ffrenchman
for hee cannot speake ffrench nor this deponent dutch soe that they are
faine to speake to each other by an Interpreter And saith the said shipp
is dutch built. And otherwise hee cannot depose./

To the third hee saith the said shipp next before her said seizure came
from Nantes, where shee tooke in her lading of [?slats], tobacco and sope
namely about an hundred and fourtie Rolls of tobacco, fiftie chests of sope
and the rest of her lading in [?slats], the quantitie whereof hee knoweth not
and otherwise negatively.

To the fourth hee saith his order from his merchant was to goe with
the said shipp and lading from Nantes to haver de Grace or Roane
and there discharge, but in case hee were hindered by winde or weather
from gaining that port, then to goe to deep to discharge, but before hee
dischardged at deep hee was to have further order from the Merchant or factor
that laded him, who promised to send thither, and saith hee was
in the service of the said Peter [?Poulle] the owner, and soe was not freighted nor [?was]
to receive any freight, but only where hee dischardged hee was to receave
wages for himselfe and company who were hired and sailed by the moneth
and saith hee was going for Roane and intended to discharge ther
had hee not bin revented by the said seizure.

To the fifth hee saith it was about three yeeres since that this deponent
came last from Amsterdam with the said shipp, ancd came in ballast
to deepe and there tooke in cloth, sissers, and other trade commodities
for Brazil whether shee went, taking the Iland
of Cayman in her way where shee tooke in Turtle-fish and went and
sold the same at Saint Christofers and the Ilands thereabouts, and thence went
to Brazil and dischardged her said goods brought from deepe, and there
tooke
