touching the shipp the Sampson}

Thomas Death of London Goldsmith aged
61 yeares or thereabouts sworne as in the acts
of Court, saith and deposeth as followeth
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee well knoweth the honourable
Charles Longland interrogated and hath soe donne for theise twenty yeares last or
thereabouts, and saith that the said Mr Longland was and (as hee beleeveth)
still is the Agent or Publique Minister for this Commonwealth at
Ligorne, and there resident in that qualitie, which hee knoweth having
bin there often with him, and seeing him act in the qualities aforesaid.
To the second hee saith hat the interrogated Edward Seaman was commander
of the shipp Interrogated the Sampson, which in ffebruary and March
1652. was in the Mole of Ligorne where this deponent sawe her.
To the third hee saith hee neither knoweth nor heard ought to the effect
interrogated, but heaerd that the said Captaine Seaman was against the having his
shipp made a man of warr in the service and imployment interrogated.
To the fourth and fifth hee saith that the said Longland (as this deponent
was informed) in a peaceable and quiet manner and without force. And
afterwards when the fight happened of ligorne betwixt the English and
Dutch shipps, this deponent was at ligorne and sawe and tooke notice
that the said shipp the Sampson was then in the said expedition in the
service of this Commonwealth as a man of warr against the dutch,
under the command of the said Captaine Seaman as Captaine of her.
And otherwise hee cannot depose saving as aforesaid.
To the sixth seaventh .8th and 9th hee saith that hee this deponent was not at ligorne when
mr Longland went aboard the Sampson, and therefore hee cannot depose
thereto, but hee heard that the company of the Sampson were vert averse to
the said service, and that mr Longland comming aboard and intimating his
order to take the said vessell into the service of this Commonwealth and offereing the same or a copie yo those aboard none of
the companie would receive the same, but that hee was faine to cast it downe
at the maine mast and leave it.
To the tenth and 11th hee cannot depose.
To the 12th hee saith that hee this deponent the time and place interrogated nor at any other
time or place did not heare the said Captaine Seaman make any such declaration or
acknowledgement as is interrogated, nor ought to that effect./.
