Transcription

The more readily passe out at the scoope holes, and that the scoope holes
might not be in danger to be stopped with the seas driving any thing on
decke to them And hee saith hee well knoweth that the Master and
company of the sayd shipp Conrard did their uttmost endeavour to
preserve the sayd shipp and her homeward ladeing from damage and
alsoe well knoweth that the sayd shipp was a very stronge and
stanch shipp saving for the hurt done her by the storme as
aforesayd, and is well assured that what damage is happened to
her sayd ladeing soe happened meerely by the violence of the sayd
storme which strayned and opened her seames as aforesayd and
thereby unavoidably powred in much water into her, and not
by any neglect of the sayd Master or Company nor by any
insufficiencie of the sayd shipp for that hee being Carpenter well
knoweth the sayd shipp after the sayd storme was and continued a
very stronge tight shipp, saving the harme aforesayd receaved in
the sayd storme, and is well assured had shee not soe bin
there had bin noe hope to preserve her from perishing in the sea the
violence of the sayd storme was soe great And further to these
articles hee cannot depose./

Examined upon a libell given in the 25th of July 1655 on
the behalfe of John Bland and Company./

John Baker of deale in the County of Kent Mariner
aged 22 yeares or thereabouts a wittnes sworne and
examined saith and deposeth as followeth videlicet./

To the first article of the sayd libell hee saith that in the moneths of March
Aprill May and June 1655 arlate the arlate John Bland and Company were
and still are commonly Accompted to be the true and lawfull Owners and
Proprietors of the Pilgrim arlate and her tackle apparrell and furniture and by
the Charterparty for the voyage in question which this deponent hath seene
and beleeveth to be true it doth to this deponent appeare that they were and are Owners
thereof and hee the Master And hee saith hee this deponent being Masters Mate of the Pilgrim
the voyage in question knoweth that there were the sayd voyage laded on board the
sayd shipp at Pharoe one hundred ad fiftie butts of oyle or thereabouts
which were consigned to be delivered at London to the arlate Samuell Bathurst and
were as hee beleeveth laded for his Accompt as true Owner of them and beleeveth hee was
