suite complayned of had when hee sawe her bowe soe amendeing at
Jarra Key aforesayd And hee this deponent knoweth the sayd shipp dove
in this suite complayned of is and must of necessitie bee the same shipp
which did about two of the clock in the morning of the 8th day of
August last goe throuh the place called the well aforesayd and there sinke the sayd
vessell Successse in manner predeposed , and the reason of such his knowledge is for that
hee this deponent and others of his Company did search the river of Newcastle all
over and could finde noe other vessell either smale or great which had the picture
of an Angell on the head and of a dove in the sterne saving the shipp dove in this
suite complayned of, whose bowe was as aforesayd dubbed and a
mendeing, and alsoe for that some of the Company of the sayd shipp the dove
whose bowe was soe a mending confessed to this deponent that they came into Newcastle River upon Wednesday
the 9th of August last which was within a short tyme after the Successe aforesayd
was sunke in manner predeposed And further to these articles saving his
subsequent deposition hee cannot depose/.
To the 8th article hee saith hee hath heard some who were as they sayd present when
the offer was made) saye that the Owners of the vessell Successe were offered
for her her tackle and furniture before her setting out from dover upon the
voyage in question the summe of fower hundred pounds And hee this deponent
verily beleevth that shee and her tackle and furniture at the tyme of her sinkeing
were worth fower hundred pounds sterling and upwards And hee alsoe saith
in his this deponents Judgment the Coales in the sayd Vessell Successe
at the tyme of her sinkeing aforesayd were worth and would have yeilded
at dover if they had come safe thither one hundred and twenty pounds
sterling And this deponent alsoe saith that besides the sayd Coales
there were alsoe aboard the vessell Successe when she sunke as aforesayd,
seaven ferkins of butter belonging to this deponent and Company which with
cloathes and Sea Instruments of this deponent, and the cloathes of this deponents
company (being 4 men and a boy beside this deponent) were in this deponents
Judgment worth eighteene pounds sterling at the least And further
hee cannot depose./.
To the 9th hee saith hee cannot depose saving hee saith that
Thomas Ramsey (who was Carpenter of the shipp
the dove in this suite complayned of, and was as aforesayd mending her bow
at Jarra Key as aforesayd) did in the presence of his wife (who alsoe affirmed
the like) about five or sixe weekes last past tell this deponent that Captaine
Cable Master of the dove aforesayd had bin with his the sayd Ramseys
wife and told her that hee heard that her husband the sayd ramsey had
confessed that it was his shipp the dove (now in question) which did sinke
the vessell the Successe, and that hee the sayd Cable heard the sayd Ramsey
was to testifie soe much and then threatned the sayd Ramseys wife that if
her husband the sayd Ramsey came to testifie against him the sayd Cable
in that busines hee would bee revenged of her sayd husband
and have him hanged if hee could or the sayd Ramsey and his wife then
spake to this deponent words to the very like effect And further to this article hee
cannot depose/.
