knoweth not, went off as this deponent was in a boate without board
[?working] her the shipp cleane; and forthwith there was calling from shore
and crying out that there was a man killed in a wherry, and that
the same happpened by the said shott; whereupon the said Gunner
was very lamentably amazed, and cried out what have I donne,
I know not that there was ought in the Gunne that could doe
any hurt, or to the same effect, and upon the report of the said Gunn
the said master and those that were with him ran out of the cabbin
and the master called out and asked what the Gunner had donne
and hee saith the said master
(as hee beleeveth) had not given any order to fire the said Gunn, nor was it
seasonable or proper till his friends (whom hee meant to salute
therewith) were going ashore, whereas they were at breakfast
with the master when the said accident happened, And further
saith that the said Gunner being disturbed with amazement
at the said accident, went presently out of the shipp privately
with out the masters knowledge, and hath ever since absented
himselfe. And for the names of those friends that were soe
with the master, hee saith hee doth not knowe any of them
saving the said mr Vanderlake. And further saith that this
deponent hath since the premisses heard the master say and
protest that hee expressly ordered the Gunner (who went into
the Cabbin to him) to make
the aftermost gun readie, but saith the said Gunner
by mistake made readie the foremost.

Martin Herraw of hamborough Cooke of the said
shipp the hope, aged 37 yeares or thereabouts sworne
as aforesaid, saith and deposeth.
