Saint John Baptist afore said.}

Examined upon the foresaid allegation given in
on his highnesse behalfe 19 January last.

Richard Thurstone of Tower hill London Mariner
Late Lieutenant of the shipp the Black Raven in the
service of this Commonwealth, aged 32 yeares or
thereabouts sworne and examined.

To the first article hee saith that the shipp the Saint John Baptist arlate
at the time of her seizure by the ffleete of this Commonwealth was a
dutch built shipp, which hee knewe by her marke and fashion, hee having
used the sea theise 16 yeares and thereby being well acquainted with
the fashion of severall countries building. And saith that when the
Black Raven came up with the said shipp the Saint John Baptist amd
laded jer, asking whence shee was, the master or some of the company
answered of Amsterdam, which answer this deponent being upon the
decks of the Black Raven heard, and with others tooke expresse notice
of the same.

To the second article hee saith and deposeth that shortly after the Saint John
Baptist had submitted to the Black Raven, Maior Sedgewick
commander in cheife of the ffleete in the immediate service of this
Commonwealth, called a Counsell of warr aboard the said shipp the
Black Raven one of the shipps of the said fleete, By and before
which Counsell of warr, the master and some of the company of the
John Baptist were examined, and as thisdeponent was informed by
some of the Counsell forthwith after such examination, the said master
and some of the company had avouched before them that the said shipp the John
Baptist belonged to dantzike, notwithstanding that upon their
first haling, they had said shee belonged to Amsterdam. And otherwise
hee cannot depose.

To the third hee saith that hee cannot depose thereto, not
being present at the Counsell, but this deponent fully understood
from those of the Counsell who were present at the examination, that
the said master could not nor did produce or showe ought whereby it
might appeare that either the shipps or goods or any of them belonged
at London or any subiect of this Commonwealth.

To the fourth hee saith that the lading of the said shipp John Baptist
was wines, Rosin and feathers and some other small matters, and were
received aboard the said shipp (as the master and some of the company confessed
at Bayon in the dominion of the ffrench kinge and were of the growth
and make of ffrance. And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the fifth hee saith that the lading of the said shipp John Baptist
was taken and seized by the said ffleete on or about the eighteenth
day of March 1653, and otherwise referring himselfe to the [?draft]
of the articles of Peace hee cannot depose.
