Transcription

plundered and taken away, videlicet a Chest of sugar worth 40 li sterling,
a Chest of Chirurgerie and instrumentsm with all his cloathes and other
necessarie accomodations of a good vallue, And hee further saith that there was
due to the said Page for his wages of 20 monthes att fiftie shillings per
month amount to the summe of 50 li sterling, which att present hee saith
is lost unto him, the said Page being for all the time afore said a Man very
well affected to the Parliament and present Government of this Comonwealth of England
All which hee knoweth to bee true because hee this deponent was quartermaster
of and in the said shipp from the time of her setting forth unto the time of
her seisure as aforesaid And further hee cannot depose, saveing that hee saith
the said Page after the seisure of the said Shipp was (together with this deponent
and the rest of the Shipps Company) imprisoned att Lisbone, and so contynued
seaven weeks or thereabouts.

Hugh Ball of the parish of Stepney in the County of Middlesex
Marriner aged 35, yeares or thereabouts sworne before
the said doctor Clarke, and Examined deposeth as followeth videlicet./

That in or about the Month of May 1648, the said Shipp the Barnstable
Merchant of London (Mr John W[?e]therdge being Master and Comander thereof)
did goe out and sett saile from this Port of London upon a Merchandizeing
and tradeing voyage which time the said Raph Page did goe Chirurgeon of
and in the said shipp dureing the said voyage/ And hee saith That the said
Shipp and Company sailed first to Newfound land, thence to Lisbone where
shee was freighted by the king of Portugall for Brazeel[?a], and there dischardged
and was reladen, and returned back againe to Lisbone, And hee saith that att her
returne, Prince Ruperts Shipps rideing att an Anchor within the River of
Lisbone, and the Parliaments Shipps rideing without the Harbour there
happened a difference, betweene the Generalls of that ffleete and the king of
Portugall concerneing the said Prince Rupert, insomuch the goods in the Brazeela
ffleete goeing out from Lisbone was taken by the English Generalls, and upon
that the said Shipp the Barnstable Merchant was likewise seised and
taken by the king of Portugall in or about the month of June 1650, And
the said Raph Page (together with this deponent and the said Shipps Company
were all imprisoned andso con[XXXXed] seaven weekes or thereabouts And further saith that att the said seisure of the
ship the Barnstable Merchant, the said Page had all his goods plundered
and taken away videlicet a Chest of Sugar worth 40 li sterling and upwards, a Chest
of Chirurgereie, and all his clothes and other necessarys (saveing what were
on his backe) to a good vallue but the worth thereof he knoweth not And
also all his wages (being for 20 monthes amounting to 50 li
sterling), are (for the present) lost unto the said Page, who hee saith
was and is a man very well affected to the Parliament and Commonwealth of England
Allwhich hee knoweth to bee true because hee this deponent was a Marriner belonging
to the said shipp and went in her all the said voyage, from the time of her
setting forth to her seisure as aforesaid And otherwise hee cannot depose.
