Transcription

hee was and is an English marchant, and a native of this Nation, borne
as hee hath heard about Salisbury, and a subiect of this Commonwealth, and this deponent
never heard but that hee was and is well affected to the same and never acted
ought against it. And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the third article and first schedule annexed nowe showne unto him hee
saith that hee well knoweth the handwriting of the arlate John Sambourne
and hath had correspondence with him by letters, and verily beleeveth
the said schedule to bee the proper hadnwriting of him the said Sambourne
And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the sixth hee saith that the said John M[ervin] the producent hath for
all the time arlate bin a factor in ffrance, and there traded as a factor
and merchant for his owne advantage, and hee beleeveth hee hath estate of
English merchants with whom hee corresponds in his hands, And otherwise
hee cannot depose.

To the rest hee is not examined by direction of Mr Brooke.

To the first hee saith hee hath noe share or interest in the goods in question
And otherwise hee cannot depose.

The claime of Nicholas Cl[in]kard and}
company for the John of fflushing and}
goods}

Examined upon an allegation given on the
behalfe of the said Clinkard.

Rp. 1

Nicholas Clinkard of fflushing in Zealand
Mariner, aged 31 yeares or thereabouts
sworne and examined.

To the second article of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth that in the
moneth of August last past the arlate Peter Vandenbrooke tooke the
vessell the Saint John arlate to freight of him this deponent for a voyage
to be made with her from fflushing to fferan in the dominions of the
kinge of ffrance, and bought at fflushinge a quantitie of Seacoles
amounting to about 28 hoodes (but howe many chaldron hee knoweth not)
and there paid for the same of this deponents sight and knowledge and
laded the same as his proper goods in the said shipp to be carried to
fferan aforesaid, and there delivered to his factors of this deponents
certain knowledge, being skipper of the said shipp and receiving the said
goods aboard. And saith that hee the said Vandenbrocke was and is an
Inhabitant of fflushing and there this deponent hath observed him to
dwell and keepe a house and familie for two or three yeares last past,
and to have a wife and children there, and saith hee dwelt there before
this deponents knowledge of him, and further that both hee and this
deponent were and are subiects of the States of the United Netherland
Provinces, betweene whom and this common Wealth there was and is peace
and amitie. And otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the third hee saith that in or about the time arlate the said vessell the
John was met with by the arlate [?Bowden] and with her said [coales] seized on the
coast of ffrance by him the said [?Bowden] and brought to dover, and saith
that after the said seizure the said [?Bowden] tooke away two anchor hawsers
from the said vessell, and his company tooke away a suite of this deponents clothes and
tooke from him about five pounds sterling in money and three shirts, and
[?still] this deponent is dispoiled thereof and of his ship and lading. And
otherwise hee cannot depose.

To the fourth hee saith that at the time of the said seizure there were noe other
persons aboard the John but this deponent her master, and one other man and a
boy (who were all the shipps company) and one ffrenchman a passinger. and further
that since the bringing the said vessell and coales to dover, one [?XXXXX] pretending
interest in Bowdens shipp) hath taken them away, and turned this deponent was and
[XX] out of the possession thereof. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
