Richard Whitrowe of Wappinge in the Countye of Middlesex Suger baker
aged about 34 yeares sworne before the righte worshipfull Sir Henry
Marten knighte Judge of his Majestyes high Court of the Admiraltye sayeth and
deposeth uppon his oath as followeth videlicet

That yesterday in the evening this
deponent at the request of Barnaby
Rawlings inquired of ffrants Sergeant a Shoomaker dwelling
in East smyth within the parish of Saint Botulphes Algate amongest divers of his neighbors who had borne offices in the
same parish and were well acquainted with the sayd Sergeant
and those his neighbors tould this deponent that the sayd Sergeant was
an honest man but a poore man in estate in their
opinion, and that when they came to him for Church duetyes he complayned
that he was a poore man and that he had a greate charge of children, but did pay
for the duetyes demannded of him, which was a pennye a weeke to the poore
and then this deponent tould them that he was that same daye bound in
a bond of three hundred pounds and asked them whither they supposed the
sayd Sargeant to be sufficient enough to pay that summe if ocasion required
and they tould him that they did beleive that his
bond would not be taken amongst his neighbors for a quarter of that money
or to that effecte And this he affirmeth uppon his oath to be true./
