John Eldred of Wappinge in the Countye of Middlesex mariner aged about 48
yeares sworne before the worshipfull Basill Wood doctor of Lawes Surrogate to the
right worshiipfull Sir Henry marten Knighte Judge of his Majetyes High Court of
the Admiraltye sayeth and deposeth uppon his aoath as followeth videlicet That he
hath knowne the shipp the Magdalen and Margott wherof Peter Reyn
was master in her last voyage) for these five yeares last past, and
within that tyme went in her five voyages from the porte of London, to
Norwaye, and in every of those voyages he sayd shipp was a very weake
rotten and leakye shipp, and this deponent and company by reason of the
leakines and insufficiencye of the said shipp were im danger
of being cast away and perishinge in the sea for that the backe of the sayd
shipp was soe weake that in foule weather when
the after part of the sayd shipp was in the sea and raysed up agayne by
the waves, and the fore parte of her was downe agayne in the sea she
was soe weake and did soe buckle or bend that this deponent and companye
were much afrayd that the fore part of her would
have fallen awaye and that the sayd shipp would have perished in the sea
and this deponent did from tyme to tyme acquainte Mr
Jeremy Crewe the owner of the sayd shipp what insufficeincye he
found in her every of the sayd voyages and tould him that unlesse he did bestowe some cost of her she would sinke in the sea and the sayd Crewe
did continually deferr the repayrine of her untill the next winter
but for all the tyme this deponent went in her the sayd Crewe bestowed
noe reparations uppon her but caulkinge, for which she was little the
better for when she came to sea by reason of her weaknes thta
caulkinge workte out of her seames agayne,, and that after the sayd
shipp had bene repayred by Bryan Kiplinge before
her goeinge forth on her last voyage and was gonne downe
the river of Thames soe farr as Greenewich the sayd Crewe came
to this deponent and tould him
that the sayd shipp was noe lower then Greenwich and that she
had six or seaven foote water in her hould and desired him this deponent
to goe downe to her to sea what she ayled but this deponent havinge other
occasions to goe downe to her. And this deponent
further sayeth that when he went in her her timbers were
soe rotten that they would crumble in his hands like durt And this
he affirmeth uppon his oath to be true./
