Biographical synthesis
Edward Bigland (alt. Edwardus Bigland) (b. ca. 1589; d.>1656). Shipwright.
Resident in Southwark. Edward Bigland gave his residence in 1650 as the parish of Saint Olave in Southwark and in 1656 as the parish of Saint Magdalen in Southwark.[1]
Possibly related to Jonathan Bigland, a twenty-eight year old shipwright of Redriff, Surrey, who deposed in the High Court of Admiralty on November 3d 1657 in the case "Judith Dixford against the hulke the Elizabeth".[2]
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
The records of the High Court of Admiralty contain two depositions by shipwright named Edward Bigland (alt. Edwardus Bigland), once on May 14th 1650 and the second time on April 11th 1656.
The signatures on the two depositions are not identical - the first is his first name Edward, (1650). The second is Edwd Bigland (1656). However, it seems likely that the depositions were made by the same man, the subject of this biography.
In the first deposition, Edward Bigland deposed in the case of "Major con Perkins". He gave his age as fifty-nine, his residence as the parish of Saint Olave in Southwark, and his occupation as shipwright ("Naupegus" in the Latin of the notary public who wrote down the deposition).[3]
In the second deposition, in 1656, Edward Bigland deposed in the case of "John Mayor against a certayne lighter called the William and ffrancis whereof William Knight and company were owners and against the sayd William Knight and company comming in for their interest and against whatsoever persons et cetera". He gave his age as sixty-seaven and described himself as a shipwright of the parish of Saint Mary Magdalen in Southwark.[4]
