The third of May 1656 CENTRE HEADING
On the behalfe of Robert Blackleecth}
of London Mariner touching a losse}
in the Affrey of London.}
examined upon certaine Interrogatories
ministred on the behalfe of the
said Blackleecth.
Humphrey Burton of the Parish of saintt
Catherine neere the Towne of London Mariner
aged 58 yeeres or thereabouts sworne before the
right worshipfull. John Godolphin Doctor of Lawes one
of the judges of the high court of the Admiraltie
saith and deposeth as followeth.
17. To the first interrogatorie hee saith hee well know and
18. was aware of the shipp the Affrey interrogated at the time
19. of her departure from this port of London bound for Port a Port
20. in Portugall, and thence to returne for this port of London,
21. which her departure hence hee saith was about six monethes since
22. To the second hee saith that after such her departure shee arrived
23. at porte in Portugall ˹namely˺ about six weekes after such her depature
24. hence, and there reladed and thence from port departed with
25. her homewards cargo for this deponent port, and saith that in
26. her course of proceeding from Port for this porte of London
27. shee met with much foule stormie and tempestous weather
28. which forced her into St Georges Channell, and that when
29. the said stormie and foule weather was over, shee with the
30. first oportunitie XX of winde and weather and withall diligence
31. plied her course with all her lading brought from Port
32. intending directly for London and that coming in her
33. said course of preceeding into weymouth bay was met with
34. by a dunkirke man of warr, which so upon fought shot at and by
35. force tooke and seized the Affrey with all her lading, notwithstanding
36. that the Robert Blackleecth her master and company used all
37. diligence and did their utmost to keepe her from the said seizure
38. and saith further that when the said man of warrs company
39. had plandred and tooke out what they thought fitt, then sunk
40. her (and such lading as they left in her) ˹in the sea˺ and this shipp and
41. on Easter day last, soe that the said shipp neer and is utterly
42. last to the said Blackleecth, without any manner of receave peece
43. or satisfaction made to him for the of same and the premisses
44. hee deposeth and knoweth to be true because hee was aboard
45. (being her Gunner) and some the premisses so donne, and was
46. carried to Dunkirke by the said man of warr and there imprisoned
47. and otherwise hee cannot depose saving the Affrey staid about two
48. monethes in Port Port aforesaid, before her retourne thence for England
49. London
50. To the third hee saith that the said Robert Blackleecth was sole
51. owner of the said shipp (and for such commonly accounted X at the time
52. of such her departure from London and when shee was so taken and left
