On the behalfe of the said fflorison and companie}
touching the king david.}
dt.
2us
Cornelius Peterson of Gracht in North holland
Mariner, late boatswaine of the said shipp
the king david aged 41 yeares or thereabouts
sworne and examined as aforesaid.
To the first Interrogatory hee saith hee hath knowne the said shipp the
king david about two yeares and a halfe last, during all which space
shee hath belonged and at present belongeth to the port of Amsterdam, and
that mr ffoxe, myn heer Basse and companie, all of Amsterdam, dutch,
and subiects of the Lords the States of the United Netherlands were and are her
owners. And saith the said vessell on or about the 18th of October last went
from the Texel with 16 horses aboard her and some bricks and tiles bound
for the Charibbe Ilands, and that shee was not in any port from the
time of her departure from the Texel, and her
comming neere the Barbada's, all which hee knoweth being Boatswaine
and going the voyage in her.
To the seceond hee saith that the said shipp in her voyage ariving neere
the greate Roade of the Barbada's, there came English aboard and
understanding whence shee came, and seeing the said horses aboard, desired
to buy some of them, but Claes fflorison the master refused to sell any of
his horses unto them, telling them hee could not doe it without license from
the Governour, and soe the said Claes going ashore to get leave of the Governour
to take in fresh water, hee at his retorne aboard reported to this deponent
and the rest of the companie, that the Governour had offered and given him
leave to trade there freely, promising him asmuch libertie and freedome
in such his trading as any of the shipps that were in the roade enioyed or
had, whereupon the said master after the bringing his shipp to an anchor
further within the roade traded and sold his said horses to the
English, two whereof the Governour himselfe had, and having soe delivered them ashore, and obtained license (as hee said) from the
Governour to take in water and goe to [?kersawe] (an island under the dutch)
and fetch more horses to the Barbados, the said master tooke in water at
the Barbadoas and went accordingly and fetcht 30 horses and some
goates from [?kersaw] and retourned with them (saving one horse that
dyed by the way) and comming to the South corner of the Barbada's
about foure dutch miles off the Roade, as they were under saile, the
Grantham frigot in the service of this Commonwealth came and
seized the said shipp, 29 horses and the said goates, and carried them
into the Roade, where the master, this deponent and the rest of the
company were taken out, and turned ashore and the said shipp horses
and goates confiscated and disposed of by the English, and this hee saith
was in or about the beginning of March last new stile,
