Abstract & context
William Johnson’s father, the lawyer, Lancelott Johnson, wrote from the Inner Temple to remind Sir George Oxenden of his attempt to persuade Winter to show favour to his son. Supposedly his son was just following instructions of Mathew Andrews and Agent of Madras.
The English East India Company had brought charges against Thomas Chamber(s) and William Johnson, who may have been Chamber(s) junior. They were instructed to stay in Madras and to await Sir Edward Winter’s arrival to discuss the charges charges. They left for England, and Sir Edward Winter was seeking to stop them.
