Abstract & context

An affectionate, informal letter from Richard Oxinden to his cousin Sir George Oxenden. Richard thinks of London as a sinful city which has been punished. He has taken refuge, at "my Cozon Perimoure ye Master [?] at Lambeth" with Sarah Wainman, presumably because his house burned down in the 1666 fire. Richard Oxinden went on to marry Sarah Wainman, Elizabeth Dallison's former maid.

I heartily wish & pray these imperfect lines may be soe happy as to find yo:w in health, & yt yo:w may soe Continue till God in his providence brings yo:w safe to yo: own Native Cuntrey where yo:w are much wanted & desired now yt wee have peace w:th ye Dutch ffrench & Dane, our hoopes are yt wee may for sumtime bee quiett, if ye abommmabe wickedness of this Nation doe not Call for more plagues & Judgm:ts yn wee have groned under allready what they have been I know yow cannot be a strainger to, I sumtimes think yt they are most happy yt have honourable imployments abroad if they are men of honour & honnesty, for persons soe quallifiede have a heard taske to finde out a likelyhood [CSG, 15/01/09 – “Livelihood?] hear, I finde yt ye Committee of ye East India Comp:a are highly pleased w:th ye quick discharge of yt yow made of last ship yt was unladen & laden & all w:th in 14 days w:ch they all say was such a thing as was never don by any man before, soe yt att present yow are there ?white boy, y greate weight ?bisones yt y:n lay upon yo:w in y:t very small time, I suppose to be ye Cause yt I was not made happy w:th a line or two from yo:w, w:ch I have all wais esteeme a very greate honour when soe ever yo:w are pleased to afforde it me, since ye Dredfull fireing of ye sinfull Citty of London, her old inhabitance are scattered up & downe, I am at present w:th my Cozon Perimoure ye ?Master at Lambeth here is allso yo:s & yo:e never to be forgotten Sister Dallysons old faithfull servant Sarah Waynman who desires to have her most humble service presented to you, how well shee & all ye rest of her deare Mis friends have been rewarded by M Dalyson & his good sister Smit I suppose yow may heare by sume other hands I being lately at S:r Henry Oxindens lodgings where I found yo Lady Mother I thinke as healthy & as well as when yow left her & their I heard of this small advice ship yt was desined to yow, by whome I thought it my duty to present yow w:th my faithfull services & to give yow thanks for all yo many favours, desiring if God plese I may see yow once againe & tell yow yt none wishes you more trew happyness then,
