Transcription

The answer of the foresaid Abraham Johnson to the Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING]

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee is not nor was any of the company of the
Sampson arlate, the voyage in question, but the former voyage
by him predeposed hee went Sailemaker in her, and served then about 18 monethes,
And otherwise hee [?XXX] referreth himselfe to his foregoeing deposition.

To the second hee answereth negatively, saying hee was not present at the lading
the silver in question aboard the Sampson.

To the third hee cannot answer, not being present as aforesaid, but hee heard
that the said shipp was wholly laden at Cadiz.

To the fourth hee saith hee hath knowne the said Peter Eleson (who as aforesaid is
one of the owners of the said shipp Sampson) about twelve yeares last past
And otherwise hee referreth himselfe to his foregoing deposition, saying hee doth
not knowe any other of the owners of the said shipp saving the said Peter Eleson.

To the fifth hee saith hee last sawe the said Peter Eleson about 18 monethes
since at Amsterdam upon the Exchange there, and saith hee is of a lowe stature
of about 34 yeares of age, redddie coloured, and a well favoured man
and that the said last time that this deponent saawe him hee did not speake
with him, but hath severall times before drunck at his house and there
spoke with him in Lowe dutch, and otherwise hee remembreth not saving
his foregoeing deposition.

To the sixth hee saith that English (which hee can very well speake) is his
Mother tongue, and that having lived 26 or 27 yeares in holland (ended about
14 monethes since) hee can speake good lowe dutch, and that having often
sailed in Spanish shipps hee can Speake Spanish, which language hee learnt
about 14 yeares since, and that hee can speake some ffrench.

To the 7th hee saith hee can write legibly, and can reade both written and
printed.

To the 8th negatively, saying hee doth not knowe the Purser of the
Sampson, more then by sight, having yesterday seene him in this place
and formerly severall times at Amsterdam in the hoouse of the said Peter
Eleson.

To the 9th. 10th and 11th negatively, saying hee never sawe the Pursers booke
interrogated.

To the 12th hee hath not soe deposed.

To the 13th negatively.

To the 14. and 15 hee hath not soe deposed.

To the 17th and 18th hee saith that hee was not in company of any of the
shipps of this Commonwealth that seized the said shipp the Sampson and
her lading, and otherwise negatively.

To the 19th negatively.

To the 20th 21 and 22th hee referreth himselfe to his foregoeing deposition, And
otherwise cannot depose.

To the 23th hee saith that hee lived continually at Amsterdam (saving nowe
and then that hee was absent in sea-voyages) for 26. yeares or thereabouts
ended about 14 monethes since, at which time hee removed to Ostend with
his wife and there tooke a chamber for 6 weekes space or thereabouts
and thence came for England and hath ever since dwelt in Saint Catherin's
Lane neere the Tower of London, the place of his present abode.

To the 24th hee saith that the said 18 monethes that this deponent went
as one of the company and served in the said shipp the Sampson about 7 or
8 yeares since, was during the warrs betwixt Spaine and holland. And
otherwise hee referreth himselfe to his foregoeing deposition.

To the 25th hee saith that the said Otto George upon his retourne to
Amsterdam from Cadiz with the said shipp the said voyage wherein this
deponent served in her as aforesaid delivered silver to one
living at the signe of the Grave van Buren neere the old church in Amsterdam
