Other information
Thomas Markland, grocer of London, had family connections with Wigan in Lancashire. A record in the Lancashire Archives dated 1648 mentions Thomas Markland, "citizen and grocer of London", and Mathewe Markland, "gentleman", described as "son and heir of Robert Markland of Wigan, mercer, deceased." George T.O. Bridgeman (1890) list a "Garard Markland Alderman", a "Mathew Markland Alderman" and "Mr. Thomas Markland", all making small monetary gifts to the poor of Wigan.[1]
A possible relative, Robert Markland, represented Wigan in the House of Commons in the 1659 session. Browne Willis (1750) lists as "Rob. Markland, Inhabitant of the Town", alongside Hugh Forth, merchant of London[2];
Nathan Heywood, in an on-line contribution on 17th-Century Lancashire Farthing Trade Tokens, notes that Mathew Markland, of Wigan, had the crest or arms of his family represented on his token. He further notes that the arms of the incorporated company of London Grocers' were exhibited on the token of Robert Markland, of Wigan, and the arms of the Tallowchandlers on the token of Mathew Markland, of Wigan.[3]
