Transcription That hee this deponent was one of the CompThat hee this deponent was one of the Company of a certaine shipp called<br /> the ''Jane'' of Weymouth which laye in the Port of Weymouth on and before the 20th day<br /> of december 1653 bound for ffrance and by that meanes knoweth and sawe<br /> the shipp the ''John'' arlate at the sayd Port of Weymouth upon and before the sayd 20th<br /> day of december 1653 and sawe and observed having bin on board her that shee<br /> had then on board her besides her Master 15 men and boyes and was then victualed and<br /> prepared to sett sayle from the sayd Port to the place of her<br /> intended voyage with the first good wynde that should happen, and was then a<br /> stronge and stanch shipp And saith that on the sayd twentith day of december<br /> and before there laye before Weymouth Roade certayne shipps in the imediate<br /> service of this Commonwealth as the ''Speaker'' the ''hound'' the ''Guinney ffrigott'' and<br /> others, the officers of which shipps did take up and impresse seamen both<br /> on shoare and out of Merchants shipps lying in Weymouth Roade from before<br /> the sayd 20th of december 1653 to about the 18th of January next following<br /> during which tyme the sayd Commonwealths shipps continued in Weymouth Riade<br /> and saith in the sayd tyme hee this deponent was once pressed by the sayd<br /> Officers but by mediation of freinds, gott him selfe cleered thereof, and hee<br /> saith hee well knoweth that 4 or 5 of the Company of the sayd shipp the ''John''<br /> were alsoe within the sayd tyme pressed to serve the state, and all of them except<br /> the boatswaine and a boy did forsake the sayd shipp ''John'' and hide themselves where<br /> they could to escape the presse aforesayd And saith hee beleeveth that from the sayd<br /> 20th of december 1653 untill about the 19th of January following. noe<br /> shipp could sett sayle out of the Port of Weymouth withourt eminent hazard to have<br /> all or most of her men taken out of her to serve in the sayd shipps of this<br /> Commonwealth And hee this deponent in the shipp the ''Jane'' aforesayd did<br /> departe from the Port of Weymouth on or about the 19th day of January 1653 old<br /> style and not before by reason of the sayd presse, And beleeveth for the same<br /> reasons that noe other shipps did passe out from the sayd Port of Weymouth<br /> from the sayd 20th of december 1653 till about the 19th day of January next<br /> following And further to these articles hee cannot depose./ To the rest of the articles hee is not examined by direction of the producent/ To the Interrogatories/ [CENTRE HEADING] To the firs Interrogatorie hee saith hee cometh to testifie the truth of his knowledge<br /> being soe requested by the producent and favoureth all the parties litigant alike<br /> and desyreth right may prevaile in this cause./ To the 2 Interrogatorie hee saith that the winde was not fayre but contrary on the 20th of<br /> december 1653 for any shipp to proceede from the harbour of Weymouth to the<br /> westwards and soe continued till about 2 or 3 dayes before the foresayd 19th of<br /> January 1653 old style soe that no shipps did in that tyme as hee beleeveth [?put]<br /> out of the sayd harbour westwards, nor indeede durst or could any passe as (hee beleeveth)<br /> during that tyme though the winde had bin fayre by reason of the premisses<br /> aforesayd And further cannot danswere./ To the 3 Interrogatorie hee saith hee very well lnoweth the shipp ''John'' of Weymouth<br /> Interrogate and hath knowne her these 4 or 5 yeares last past and saith the sayd shipp<br /> was on the sayd 20th of december 1653 ready fitted and provided with men and [?XXX]<br /> and all necessaries in manner predeposed to have then sett sayle from the Port of Weymouth<br /> if the winde had bin then faire for her soe to doe and that shee durst have gone for<br /> feare of the presse aforesayd And saith hee cannot write nor reas but hee<br /> remembreth that the winde stood contrarie the sayd 20th of december and longe after [?XX]<br /> [?in GUTTER]longe after [?XX]<br /> [?in GUTTER]  +
