A businesse of examination of witnesses}<br /> touching the late seizure of the shipp}<br /> ''Saint John Baptiste'' of London John Clawson master<br /> promoted by Arnold Beake and company against}<br /> Captaine Sedgewick and Captaine Leverett.}<br /> Suckley.} Examined upon an allegation<br /> on the behallfe of the said<br /> Mr Beake. '''1''' '''John Clawson''' of Dantzike Mariner<br /> Master of the said shipp ahed 35 yeares<br /> or thereabouts, sworne and examined<br /> saith and deposeth as followeth. To the first and second articles of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth<br /> that hee this deponent about eight monethes since, having<br /> sold a shipp (whereof hee was formerly master) at Dantzik, came<br /> thence to this port in August last to buy another, and<br /> meeting with Mr Arnold Beake of this citie merchant, the said<br /> Mr Beake told him that seeing hee this deponent was a<br /> batchelour and a dantziker and one of whom hee had heard a<br /> good report, hee the said Mr Beake and companie would furnish<br /> him with a shipp and send him out in their service, which this<br /> deponent yeelding unto, Mr Beake for himselfe and<br /> company bought shortly after the shipp the ''Saint John Baptist''<br /> arlate of the Commissioners for prize goods here in this citie<br /> the same having bin brought as prize to this Commonwealth<br /> by the name (as hee taketh it) of the ''Golden Lilly'', taken from<br /> the hollanders, with which buying this deponent was acquainted<br /> being then here present in this citie and staying for the said shippe<br /> And saith that the said shipp (then lying at dover)<br /> being soe bought by and for accompt of the said Arnold Beake and<br /> company namely Elias Beake and John Dolius of this citie<br /> merchants and Michael de Haze and Thomas Greene<br /> merchants of Dover, the said Mr Beake and rest of his company<br /> here constituted this deponent master of her and sent him downe<br /> to Dover to the said Mr de Haze and Mr Greene, who upon<br /> his comming there gave him possession of her, and saith the said<br /> persons before named were and are the owners and proprietors<br /> of teh said shipp the ''Saint John Baptist'' and of her tackle and furniture<br /> and for such commonly accompted. And further that the premisses<br /> being soe donne, teh said Mr Beake and company before named<br /> in or about the moneth of January last past (English stile) set<br /> out the said shipp from the port of Dover arlate under<br /> the conduct of this deponent with a cargazone of goods for the<br /> said owners accompt to be carried to Bayon or Saint Sebastians, and this deponent having<br /> provided himselfe of mariners which hee met and hired [?at ?Dover]<br /> and received the said lading aboard departed and sailed to and<br /> safely arrived at Bayon in the dominion of the Kinge of ffrance<br /> andon of the Kinge of ffrance<br /> and  +
