Purpose
This London hearth tax look-up table is a feature of the MarineLives-Tools wiki, which is a companion wiki to Annotate HCA 13/72.
Both wikis are made available free of charge to anyone (whether academic, student, or enthusiast) who takes an interest in the history of the Early Modern world.
The wikis are the creation of the MarineLives project team, an academic/public history group, dedicated to the transcription, annotation and use of English Admiralty Court records, 1650-1669.
The MarineLives team will be adding content to the MarineLives-Tools wiki over the next few weeks. To encourage you to sign up and to contribute to our free wikis, the content of the MarineLives-Tools wiki will be available on a taster basis, without registration, for the next seven days.
If you like what you see, and want to contribute to our project, please sign up - there is no need to wait a week. Just do it.
For more information on MarineLives and the MarineLives Annotation Project read our Shipping News blog entries:

- ↑ Thomas Tomlins (alias Thomblings, Tomblings) wrote to Sir George Oxenden from St. Leonard Bromley in a letter dated March 26th, 1663; he also gave St. Leonard Bromley as his residence in his will. There were fourteen addresses between Justice Tomlins and Mr Boone in the 1666 hearth tax return for St. Leonard Bromley (26th March 1663, Letter from Thomas Thomlins to Sir GO, St. Leonards Bromley; PROB 4/3008 Tomlins, Thomas esq., of St. Leonards, Bromley, Midd. 1678 3 Sept. - ↑ Lady Crispes. Lady Anne Crispe (b. ?, d. ca. 1669); daughter of ?Edward ?Prescott, salter (b. ?, d. ca. 1619), and the widow of Sir Nicholas Crispe (b. ca. 1599, d. Feb 1666). Married Nicholas Crispe circa ?1619. Sir Nicholas Crisp(e) was the son of Ellis Crisp (b. ?, d. ca. 1625), a London alderman and London sheriff, and of ?Lady ?Katherine ?Pye (TBC). His brother was Dr Tobias Crispe, a cleric. Sir Nicholas Crispe's death was mentioned by Sir George Smith in a letter to Sir George Oxenden dated march 14th, 1665/66. The forty-five hearth property in Hammersmith, within the parish of Fulham, lay on what is now named Winslow Road, on the north shore of the Thames. Inheriting land and a house from his mother, Nicholas Crisp built a mansion in brick in ?16XX at the substantial cost of £23,000-25,000. No post-mortem inventory has survived for Sir Nicholas Crispe. However, a detailed description of the house has been provided by Faulkner (1839: 283-287), as it was post-1792, when it was inhabited by the widowed Margravine of Brandenburg-Anspach. Further property in Sir Nicholas Crispe's name appears in the Kent hearth tax returns (Lady day 1664) for the upper part of Deptford ('S[i]r Nicholas Crispe 3 hearths (empty house, chargeable)') and the lower part of Deptford ('S[i]r Nicholas Crispe 6 hearths (empty house; ?chargeable)'). His son, Ellis Crisp, had a twenty-four hearth home in Merton (Surrey tax return, Lady day, 1664). Sir Nicholas Crispe's Hammersmith brickworks was a source of cash, which he invested in commercial interests, principally in trade with the East Indies and West Africa. It was also a source of glass beads which he exported to West Africa. Museum of London Archaeological work 2001-XXXX revealed two glass furnaces and extensive glass bead waste on Crispe's former Hammersmith estate. It also revealed brick kilns and apparent dye vats. Sequestration records show that imported African redwood, used for dyeing, was stored at Hammersmith. Presumably, Crispe used such dye woods in his Hammersmith dye houses (1888: 146). Property belonging to Captain [Nicholas] Crispe was recorded in Inhabitants of London, 1638 ("The Signe of the Sheppard being part of Capt. Crispe his house £12/10, The Signe of the Two Black Boyes, being the other part of the said house £ 12/10"). His mansion house in Limestreet was sold by the candle in April 1645, a prior inventory being made for the sequestrators (p. 146). His estate was ordered sequestered in December 1651 for non-payment of debts to Dorothy Seymour, resulting from his activity as a Customs farmer with Sir Paul Pindar, Sir John Jacobs, Sir Job Harby, Sir John Nulls, and Sir John Harrison (1888: 511-513) (14th March 1665/66, Letter from George Smith to SirGO, London;'St. Mildred, Bread Street,' in T.C. - ↑ Sir John Brownlow. Sir John Brownlow (b. 1593/94, d. 1679), 1st baronet of Belton, of Grantham, Lincolnshire. The St Giles in the Fields property was named Lennox House, after its former owner Esmé Stuart, Earl of March (later Duke of Lennox). The house was a property of 40 hearths, comparable in size to Bristol House. The house appears (apparently) on the Morden & Lea map of London "occupying a position in the central portion of the estate, with a wide approach from Drury lane." Surprisingly, it is neither visible on Hollar's plan, 1658, nor on Faithorne's map, 1658. Brownlow also had a house in Isleworth, Middlesex (20 hearths, 1666). Peter Hoare has written on both Sir John Brownlow, and his father Richard Brownlow (b. 1553, d. 1638), who was chief prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas for forty-seven years and an author on legal precedents. He states that Sir John Brownlow studied at Oxford and the Middle Temple, though he suggests that Brownlow did not actively practice law. He was created a baronet in 1641 and supported the parliamentarian cause. Hoare states that Sir John Brownlow lived largely at his house in Belton, Lincolnshire, with his wife Alice Pulteney, dau. of Sir John Pulteney. His wife died at the Isleworth property in 1676. The house at Belton was demolished in 1695 by his great-nephew, the "young" Sir John Brownlowe, and a new house built on a nearby site (PROB 11/364 Bath 124-185 Will of Sir John Brownlowe of Grantham, Lincolnshire 28 June 1680, pp. 20; 'Site of Lennox House', in W. - ↑ Lady Allenton. Lady Allington, mother of Lord Allington. By the 1675 hearth tax return Lady Ivey had become the leasholder. The Survey of London, vol. 5, states "In 1647 Sir Gervase Scroope, Adrian's son, sold the lease to Sir John Brownlow, who certainly acquired the freehold also, though no record of the transaction has come to light. Finding the house too large Sir John divided it in two, and in 1662 Lady Allington was paying a rent of £50 for the smaller of the two residences. Sir John died in November, 1679." - ↑ Dudles Short Esqr. Dudley Short (b. ?, d. ca. 1672), citizen & fishmonger. The Survey of London, vol. 5, states that William Short bought several parcels of land in St Giles, west of Drury Lane, in 1590. Subsequently he sold off several parts of this land. The lease on "Lennox House", which stood on part of Short's former land, was later acquired by Sir John Brownlow, who split the house into two (PROB 4/14064 Short, Dudley, of St. Giles in the Fields, Mdx., Citizen & Fishmonger of London 1673 26 Sept. - ↑ Sr Nicholas Strowd. Sir Nicholas Strode (b. ?, d. 1683). The eldest son and sole executor of Sir George Strode (b. 1583, d. 1663), who was buried at St. James, Clerkenwell, on June 2nd, 1663. Nicholas was an examiner in Chancery, who was knighted on June 27, 1660. He was brother-in-law to Richard Holworthy, London merchant, and to Ellis Crispe, son of Sir Nicholas Crispe, the customs farmer. The death of Richard Holworthy, Mathew Holworthy's brother, was noted by Sir George Smith in a letter to Sir George Oxenden dated March 1665/66: "three mo:ths Since dyed S:r Martin Noell & his lady & Dick Holdworthy the 2 former of the plague the latter by á fall off his horse." As a result, Richard Hollworthy did not appear in the 1666 hearth tax returns, though his brother, Mathew Holworthy (alias Holsworthy) was listed in the 1662 Hearth Tax return for the sixth precinct of Coleman Street ward. Ellis Crispe had a house at Merton, Surrey (24 hearths). The post-mortem inventory for Sir Nicholas Strode is likely to be for his houses at Chevening, Kent, and Etchingham, Sussex. However, a post-mortem inventory survives for his father from 1664 for St. James, Clerkenwell, which was his father's principal residence. This is likely to give an accurate view of the property at the time of the 1666 hearth tax under the son's ownership. Hasted states that Thomas Polhill, Esq., of Clapham inherited the house and estate of "Chepsted-house" from his brother. The house in the Kent 1664 Lady day Hearth Tax returns was recorded as "Mr Polhill 26 hearths," significantly smaller than the Inigo Jones designed Chevening House, which was recorded as "Mr Bevan 48 hearths." Chepsted-house was located at the southern end of the parish of Chevening, Kent. The house was in existence since at least the latter part of the reign of Elizabeth I. Polhill sold the house to "Sir Nicholas Strode, of Westerham," before his death in 1665 (The Westerham, Kent, estate having been purchased by Sir George Strode, his father). The widow of Sir Nicholas Strode resold the house in July 1693 to William Emerton of the Temple. He demolished and rebuilt the house. It then returned into Polhill family hands through its sale by his widow to David Polhill in May 1711 (PROB 4/10105 Strode, Sir Nicholas, kt., of Chepsted in Chevening, Kent and Etchingham, Sussex 30 Aug. 1683 30 Aug.; PROB 4/21943 Strode, Sir George, kt. of St. James, Clerkenwell, Mdx. 1664 22 Oct.; PROB 11/373 Drax 52-101 Will of Sir Nicholas Strode of Chevening, Kent 30 August 1683; PROB 11/311 Juxon 52-102 Will of Sir George Strode of Saint James Clerkenwell, Middlesex 03 June 1663; PROB 11/356 Reeve 1-55 Will of Sir Mathew Holworthy of Hackney, Middlesex 25 November 1678;'Strode, George,' George Gery Milner-Gibson-Cullum, Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, vol. 55 (XXXX, XXXX), pp. 56-57; 'Pedigree of Strode,' in Frederick A Crispe, Fragmenta Genealogica, vol. 8 (Private Press, 1902), p. 92; 'Chevening,' in Edward Hasted, 'Parishes: Chevening', The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent: Volume 3 (1797), pp. 105-126, viewed 22/02/12); 'Chevening' in - Kent Hearth Tax Assessment Lady Day 1664: CKS: Q/RTh Transcribed and computerised by Duncan Harrington; March 1665/66, Letter from George Smith to Sir GO; 'Hearth Tax: City of London 1662: Coleman Street ward: Sixth Precinct', London Hearth Tax: City of London, 1662 (2011), viewed 26 December 2011)
