A "Jno: Privett" appears in the Houndsditch Precinct of St Botolph Aldgate in the 1666 hearth tax returns with a dwelling of six hearths.[1] There is also an inventory for a John Privett of "St. Buttolph without Aldgate, London", dated October 3rd 1674.[2] The latter inventory needs to be inspected by this author.
A Captain John Privett commanded the London 1667-1672 on several trips to Bantam and Surat. He kept a journal of a voyage from England to Bantam in the London, which survives in manuscript form at the British Library.[3]
The same Captain may have died commanding the Assistance, retaking St Helena from the Dutch ca. 1674.[4]
He was involved commercially with William Williams, who appears to have been both Captain, citizen and merchant taylor, with a house in Aldgate.[5]
However, it is not certain that the above Captain John Privett is the same person as the writer of the letter below to Sir George Oxenden.
