The same day
Robert Harwell of Ratcliff in the parish of Stepney
and County of Middlesex Mariner one of the Company and a
Midshippman of the Shipp the Vine aged twenty five yeares
or thereabouts a wittnes sworne and examined saith and
deposeth
7. That the shipp the Vine of London (James Barker Master) about the
8. latter end of December 1654 sett sayle from Gravesend bound on a
9. voyage to the East Indies and this deponent went a Midshipp man in her,
10. and John May went Masters Mate and Pylott of her the sayd voyage
11. outward bound, but the sayd May left her at her arrivall at Meslipatam
12. in the East Indies, there having bin frequent fallings out and differences
13. in the sayd shipps outward voyage betwixt the said Master and the sayd
14. May: And saith that there was in the moneth of June ˹1655˺ a great difference
15. and dissention betwixt the sayd Master and the sayd May touching a Compasse
16. hee this deponent (as this deponent hath heard by others of the sayd shipps
17. Company) but this deponent being a sleepe in his Cabbin when the sayd
18. differense about the sayd Compasse happened, hee this deponent cannot
19. speake anything of his knowledge touching the same, but saith that
20. about three or fower dayes after the same happened, the sayd May came
21. to this deponent and told him ˹this or the like in effect˺ that by reason of difference betwixt the
22. said Master and him hee did beleeve the sayd Master would proceede
23. to bring him to the Capsterne and punish him ˹and˺ asked this deponent whether

25. to free him from punishment and told him that Swinburne the Boatswaine
26. and diverse others ˹of the sayd shipps Company˺ had promised to stand by him the sayd May and assiste him
27. that none should meddle with him but the sayd Master, And hee
28. further sayeth that ˹a goode XXXX some dayes˺ after the sayd May had soe desired this deponents
29. assistance as is before declared, the sayd May being standing by the
30. Bitts of the sayd shipp accompanied with this deponent and this
31. precontest Daniell harman and the sayd Swinburne the Boateswaine,
32. the sayd May entered into discourse concerning wages, and sayd
33. the sayd Master had denyed him his wages, and sayd that if they
34. this deponent and the sayd harman and Swinburne would bee
35. ruled by him
36. hee knew there was money sufficient ˹and more˺ in the Stearne sheates to pay
37. them their him and them their wages and that when the sayd shipp should
38. arrive at Meslapatam they would pay them selves their due out of
39. it and goe ashoare XXXXXXXX the sayd shipp whereto the sayd Boatswaine
40. replyed that it was better to lett it rest and doe nothing therein XXX till
41. they came at Meslepotam whether the shipp was to goe, and then hee the sayd
42. Boatswaine could pick a boates crue to carrie the Marchants and Master
