Thomas Webb of London aged 23.
yeares or thereabouts a Wittnes seorne and examined.
To the first article hee saith, That hee this deponent hath well knowne the
arlate William Pym by letters of Correspondencie and in person for about
7. yeares last past, during all which time the said William Pym hath bin
and is reputed and generally knowne and observed amongst Merchants to be an
Englishman. And further cannot depose./-
To the second article hee saith, That for 5. yeares immediately proceeding the yeare
1653. last past the said William Pym did live and reside in Saint Mallo in
ffrance in the quality and condition of an English ffactor and was there in that
condition for all that time employed by severall English Merchants of this Citie
and elswhere particular;y by Mr Thomas Lambe this deponents late
Master, Nathaniel Maunton, Mr Bludworth, Mr Thomas Papillon,
and other Merchants of London, and by sich his employment to the best of this
deponents judgement and estimation, the said William Pym did and might very well
gett five hundred pounds per annum, for that of this deponents observation, the said
William Pym haveing the repute and name of an honest and able factor.
had during that time severall Commissions of great importance both from this
deponents said Master (by whose Commissions alone this deponent is convinced and verily beleeveth
the said William Pym did really gett one hundred pounds per annum) and from the other
Merchants predeposed, besides severall others by whom the said William Pym was
also imployed in that way as this deponent hath bin informed by persons of
Creditt:- The premisses gwwe deposeth upon the knowledge this deponent hath had
of the negotiation of the said William Pym by meanes of his Correspondencie
with this deponents said master for all the time aforesaid. And further cannot depose.
To the 3. hee saith, That this deponent hath been informed by severall persons of
Creditt both here and in ffrance, That the said William Pym in or about the
time arlate was employed from thence at the request of severall English and
ffrench Merchants, to sollicite the then Parliament and Councill of State
for the permission of a free Commerce between England and Saint Mallo, and
that the said William Pym did accordingly undertake and act in the said imployment
And further cannot depose/:-
To the 4th article hee saith, That forasmuch as hee this deponent was not at Saint
Mallo at the time of the departure arlate of the said William Pym from thence
upon the occasion aforesaid, hee knoweth not what goods or Merchandizes the said
William Pym was then and there possessed off nor can this examinate
