yeares or thereabouts sworne and examined.
To the nineteenth article of the said allegation hee saith hee<br />
very well knoweth the shipp the ''Endimion'' allegate whereof<br />
Gervase Couchman was late commander and was aboard<br />
her immediately before her proceeding from the downes on the<br />
voyage in question, wherein hee knoweth shee sailed in<br />
the service and imployment of the English East Indiea<br />
company who were her freighters, and saith shee was<br />
dispeeded out of the downes on the said voyage on or about<br />
the third day of ffebruary Anno 1655 with order from the<br />
said companie to saile for Bantam, where shee was by the said<br />
companies order to take in her lading of pepper, sugar and other goods,<br />
which were proper for sale at Surat, and with the same to proceed for<br />
Surat, where by the same order shee was with the proceed thereof to take in such goods as were<br />
propper for the markets of Europe, and therewith to retourne for England,<br />
and that as hee by letters and dispatches from those parts (which hee hath<br />
seene) and otherwise bin informed and beleeveth the said shipp ''Endimion''<br />
arived before Bantam in August 1656 but was not by the dutch<br />
permitted to enter that port, whereby the designe was wholly<br />
frustrated, and the dammage thereby redounding to the companie<br />
very greate, for hee saith it is very probable and hee is fully<br />
perswaded that the agent and therest of the Companies factors would<br />
at Bantam and thereabouts have laded a cargo of pepper and other goods upon the said shipp, which<br />
would in all probabilitie have amounted unto about thirtie thousand<br />
Rialls of eight, and according to the said companies order have dispeeded<br />
her for Surat, where they might in their sale (according to former markets)<br />
have produced about 50 per cent profit which would have amounted to the summe of about<br />
fourtie five thousand Rialls of Eight, which summe of about fourtie<br />
five thousand Rialls of eight, if it had bin invested in goods<br />
procurable in and about Surat, as Callico's, Indico's and other<br />
goods, usually sent thence for England, might and probably would<br />
(though in dull markets) when the shipp had here arived have produced sixtie<br />
per cent profitt, which would have amounted to about seaventie<br />
thousand Rialls of eight, Soe that the companies losse (occasioned betweene Bantam and Surat<br />
by the said dutch their not suffereing the said shipp to goe into Bantam)<br />
being fifteene thousand Rialls of eight at five shillings per Riall<br />
(which is the usuall valew) amounts to three thousand seaven hundred and fiftie<br />
pounds sterling, and their losse betweene Surat and England (occasioned<br />
as aforesaid) being twenty seaven thousand Rialls at the said rate<br />
of five shillings per Riall amounts to six thousand seaven hundred<br />
and fiftie pounds, the whole losse to tenn thousand five hundred pounds.
