Master's mate of the ship the ''Richard'' (Master: [[Henry Sheere]] ) in October 1655, when she lay at Teneriff in the Canaries.

Resident in 1656 in Deptford in the county of Kent.

==Evidence from High Court of Admiralty==
Fifty-eight year old John Withers deposed on February 28th 1656 in the High Court of Admiralty.<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.62v Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.62v]]</ref> He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Mathew Smith and company in the cause of "Smith and company against Page Ingram Body and Kendal".

The case concerned a dispute at the Canaries.
