Abstract & context


This is a short, social letter, from Maximilian Dallison (alias Dalyson) to his uncle, Sir George Oxenden, dated March 30th, 1663, from his home at the Hamptons, West Kent.

Maximilian was the eldest child and only son of Elizabeth Dallison, Sir George Oxenden's elder sister. He was writing from his home, the Hamptons, West Peckham, a few miles from the city of Rochester. The house had been leased to Maximilian and his widowed mother, Elizabeth, on Maximilian's marriage to Frances Stanley, the daughter of a Kent brewer and property investor, Thomas Stanley

It joyes mee not á little to heare y:t you are safe arrived & in health at Surr:t where Considering yo:r much busienesse you meete w:th by reason of yo:r great employments causes mee to beleeve it weare an injury to trouble you with many lines, yett knowing it weere in excusable if I should not write at all; Since y:e losse may prove y:e more acceptable, I onely begg yo:r love & favour w:ch I much prise & valew Beseeching the
