Abstract & context


Henry Gary wrote to Sir George Oxenden in a letter dated October 27th, 1662. The letter was sent from Goa.

In the letter, Gary XXXX

Henry Gary had been in the East Indies since at least early 1650, when he was continued in service at Scinda or Tutha, as the most junior member of the factory.[1]

Haveing been Large in y:e Generall Papps w:ch goos by M:r Gerald Aungier[2] & theire Coppyes by a ???Cossud I shall not need to make any repetition of any thing there in (sic: two words) Conteyned, hopeing that they may bee satisfactory to you, as to y:e manifestation of our Endevo:es though not to yo:r expectation, as to y:e Leopards disposall here, w:ch would much have Contented mee to have bein an instrum:t of haveing taken off y:e Trouble w:ch probabily this ship may give you by her Comeing Towards you.

I shall now acquaint you in Breife because much writeing dooth very much prejudice my health (which I hope in God to recover here) That M:r Andrewes[3] hath written soo effectually to y:e ?Contradores here, y:t had not I dissuaded them, they weare resolved to have sent him some ?incommondas this yeare, but haveing ?soo (Or, 'too') farr prevailed w:th them they are resolved to send all they intend for Europe unto yo:r selfe as I question not but they doe by this Conveyance acquaint you as much themselves, they haveing tould mee as much; heerein I hope my endeavours will Ballance y:e Just success I found in y:e Leopards ffreighting & y:t you will bee pleased to esteeme mee among those y:t highly honor you, & y:t I may not still remayne buryed in oblivion when opportunityes may present for my future advancem:t for hither ?too by fate, & enemyes I have gone soo much retrograde y:t had not God armed mee w:th an extraordinary measure of patience it were enough to make mee become despXXXXX

Because you know it is á Busyenesseof Consiquence, They are much taken w:th him & heareing a good report of cap:t Browne desires y:t hee may alsoe Carry pte of theire ?encommendas haveing desired mee to write unto you to y.e same effect. Dom ffrancisco de ?Lime alsoe desires mee to acquaint you of M:r Andrewes unhandsome dealings w:th him a bout a pcell of Amber Greece hee gott out of M:r Lloyd[7] hands w:ch hee will not ?redeliver nor make any satisfaction for it, pretending to keepe it for his ??wheate, for w:ch hee still demands satisfaction fro: those of Cocheene, y:e said Sig:r ffrancisco de Lime[8] hath sent you his lre & procuration beseeching you to recover y:e Amber or its worth fro: M:r Andrewes; whome pray S:r acquaint him not y:t I have written unto you Concerning it because hee is a pson y:t cares not to traduce any man w:th y:e most in famous termes y:t can bee imagined upon y:e least occasion y:t may bee.
